This was a film I had prepared in January of 2016 for the Diocesan Convention of Delaware hosted by my church. It’s a documentary about some of the people and missions of the church for those who made not know. The work was made a bit easier thanks to my interview subjects and the amount of materials I had access to. Enjoy!
Yesterday, I introduced a new category for this site in order to free up Saturday for newer or more varied short films. I like this word better as a choice rather than what Oxford chose this year, which I think of as a non-word that signals we’ve entered an age of Post-Intelligence if we truly embrace it.
Anyhow, Dictionary chose this based on the spike in searches in the US. No doubt linked to a certain campaign featuring a certain guy. To create an accompanying film they got Robert Reich to play on the style of his Facebook videos and he discusses the word well, in context, and with some snazzy whiteboard illustrations. Enjoy!
The film is cut at last, and in stunning fashion, it is used in an effort to depict violence. So much for that being a modern problem.
Color, like sound, came to film well before many realize. Initially the only way to bring color to film was hand tinting, which debuted as a technique in 1895.
Sports on film is common either in drama or broadcast live sports. In this footage 6 rounds were fought exclusively for cameras. This is all that remains.
While it may shock modern audiences to think of a time when women had not yet “starred” in a film, so to speak; consider for a moment that there was a time many centuries ago in England when women were forbidden from performing on stage, so this early egalitarianism is noteworthy.
Contrary to what many believe, there were experiments with sound in the silent era. The first of which is this short clip of a fiddler playing a song as two men danced. The motion picture has had people testing its bounds and limits from the start.
Thomas Edison was many things, some admirable, some not as much. One thing that’s undeniable is that he was a great believer in the copyright and the patent. So much so that he nearly suffocated the fledgling art & science of film in its infancy. However, he did set some precedents and this is one: he was the first to copyright the content of a film.
Another short, another first in film history. This simple action is cited as being the first ever staged scene on film. Truly much of early film work and experiments were documentarian in nature, here there is an effort to choreograph a sequence of actions for the camera: in short the birth of mise-en-scene.
